Saturn devouring his son : Francisco Goya
|
For my inspiration I focused on one of my favorite Spanish artist Goya, more particularly his “Black Paintings” after 1819. These painting were a murals, directly painted on his farmhouse wall. The paintings were set to be a representation of Goya’s bleak response to life. The painting contained very horrific and unforgettable images. From all the Black Painting I picked Saturn Devouring his Son and the sleep of reason produce a monster. Saturn Devouring his Son is a painting that illustrates the myth of the Roman god Saturn, who, was control by a prophecy that he would be overthrown by one of his sons, ate each of them moments after they were born. |
The sleep of reason produce monsters: Francisco Goya

However, at the end, Saturn was killed and overthrew by his sixth son, Jupiter, which was hidden by his mother like the prophecy had predicted. The story had somewhat the same irony as my original idea. Therefore it provide me with an example on how to express my idea. the sleep of reason produce a monster is a simple but thoughtful painting. I inspired by the way Goya made sure that fouced was on the object not on the color by painting it black and white, almost like a drawing. I liked the background (the bats), the way he was sitting (covering his face). Therefore, I was inspired to create something incorporating those element in a original way. |
planning
Before starting the process of sketching different ideas, I created one drawing that expressed what I meant with ‘ No light No shadow’ therefore I can have a clear direction for my three sketches.
Planning Sketches
Sketch #1 For the first sketch I made sure to include all the necessary criteria which were the wings and shadows. Also, I tried to convey a sadness or somewhat depressing mood through the position of the body. One of the main element I needed to express was the relationship between “shadow and self” meaning, the shadow that follows us, is creation and a reflection of our action and I felt like the drawing lack the connection that I wanted to show.

Sketch #2 The second drawing had the connection that I imaged. The shadow was directly beside the person with the same motion and position, leading the story of "oneness" that I lacked from the first sketch. On the other hand, there was NO emotion, no story being told through the body's position which is another factor that can not be neglected. |
Sketch #3 Before I even started my third sketching, I made a list on elements I needed to incorporate in order to succeed in being my idea to life. #1 Obvious connection between shadow and light / A realistic shadow!! ( the shadow caused by direct light hitting object and reflecting) #2 The body is position in a way that created a tone of sadness but mystery as my face will be covered therefore you don't know if I’m crying or not. Also, it has to include wing and me. The third drawing touch upon all the criterias, and like that I created my final sketch that I will be using to start my digital manipulation. |
