Exhibition Text
Play With Me and Build With Me are two interconnected piece that symbolically express community's gracefully soft but powerful ability to create the illusion of oneness, protection and most importantly it’s capability to make you feel important. Inspired by the Felix Schlesinger and Johannes Evert Akkeringe two painting that accurately represented the detailed child love and the coherently connected nature of a tree.
Artistic Inspiration
Gathering Wildflowers by Felix schlesinger 1833 - 1910) Oil on canvas 17 x 21 inches |
For inspiration I focused on two artists: Felix Schlesinger and Johannes Evert Akkeringe. These two artists despite their difference in bruise work, they have a similar genres which tend to be about families, children and animals. Felix Schlesinger who was born in Hamburg, Germany on 9 October 1833. He studied art from young age. Felix one of the best-known painters of children's motifs, which were searched internationally in the 19th century and collected mainly in England and America. He further his education took place in world centers of figurative painting: in Antwerp, in Düsseldorf at the Academy of Arts and Rudolf Jordan and in Paris. Most of his work feature depictions of children in the countryside and playing with animals. I choose Gathering Wildflowers and Food For The Rabbits from Felix’s collection. The two paintings illustrate the carefreeness, love and connection of children. The painting Gathering Wildflowers, starting from the name astonishment it gave idea about what my theme will be about. Gathering Wildflowers feature two young boys. The younger one is passionately picking wild flowers as the other boy is looking at him with astonishment. The painting express the same wonder and welcomingness I want to recreate for my background. Gathering Wildflowers vividly showed the unbies kindness and passion a lot of kids seem to possesse. This kind of passion and love is shown in the painting Food For The Rabbits by Felix Schlesinger. Again starting from the name and the visional represent, the painting show a small world, full of love, compasen for small thing. |
These two painting simplistyness insparied me to create the idea for the background. The other arties I research is Johannes Evert Akkeringe. The reason I was so drown to Johannes painting Kinderen aan het strand was because of the abstract and the simplicity in telling the story. The story shares the same themes as Felix Schlesinger, the topic of love, kindness, protection, and community. The two painting by Felix Schlesinger provided me with the idea on how to create the whole outlet and from elements it will include. While, Johannes painting gave me how I will incorporated those ideas. After all research I have done I decided to include a abstract drawing of baby, a very lightly sketched but enough to indicate that its baby.

The background I included a painting of galaxy in representation of the absence of distraction, almost creating a statement about not caring anything outside of that small world, group. The baby will be surrounded by different stuffed animals, in different color and texture. Those stuffed animal expressing the small detail that get love and care under a community. The three painting create a vivite connotations on children relation with there small surrounding, from gathering wild flower: a responsibly not a lot adult want to commit, or find a enjoyment from feeding a animal. With this painting I choose to express the deep connection a child have for what they with and spend time with the idea of community.

Planning Sketches

Sketch #2 The second planning sketch I did was very simple, and doable. The sketch involve a realistic drawing of a small baby, which I will be drawing was the background and was planning to add a stencil of the earth on to the baby's hand. This drawing was very simple and to the point, it has a direct theme very easy to understand. I was debating on if I should add color to the background (the baby) or if I should keep it white. But, the only reason I didn't really do it was because I truly did not feel connected to the work at all, there was not a lot of creatively or handwork the want in to it. |
Sketch #3 After the two ideas I have realized what I really want, the two planning sketch I have done were ment to be created combining the two three by three feet poster, which because of that I only allowed myself to come up with one idea that was big and interesting enough to be in the two posters. But, that restricted my creativity, and what to include because I was adding to much idea in one poster (combining the two posters to one), therefore I separated the posters, dividing the one big idea into two different poster but with slimier theme. I separated the tree from the monkeys and peoples (from sketch #1). The tree became the a symbol of this own. Still coexisting with the idea of oneness, love and connection the tree became the a story of coherenceness.
#1 #2
The tree became the a symbol of this own. Still coexisting with the idea of oneness, love and connection the tree became the a story of coherenceness. this became the first background. The tree still has it's connection with the second background, but now not directly connected with the second background. |
while still including the baby I added the parabolic carve to add the element of mystery as will as movement. the baby will be sitting on the carve. To create the perfect movement and illusion I had to make sure the angle and the may it's tilted effect the movement. |
Process / experiment
The first thing we did was tap the stencil to the silk screen. This will secure prints so it wouldn't move around and it wouldn't come out smudged.
|
If the stencil being used were not completely covering the whole silk screen (yellow area) then it is in your best interest to cover those area with tape. Because the paint can pass through the uncover area creating unwanted mass. most of my stencil were a little smaller then the silk screen so I had to tape it or work extremely carefully and work only the part the paper covers. |
I did practice run, to understand what I needed in order for the stencil to be successful a good and to know the amount of strength needed so the ink can penetrate the silk screen properly it was printed on to paper. I first put the silk screen where I want the paint to be, than I put the ink/paint on top and work my way through the bottom. |
I personally didn't enjoy doing the practice runs because most of the practice runs end up drying the stencils, also taking a lot of time so most of the painting I completed were done without a practice.
